Week 1 Complete

What a ride the last week has been!

I got as much work done as I usually do, but I also watched copious amounts of tv shows, attended a couple of webinars, did video training and read several books.

I was only watching the tv shows because I was too tired to do anything else and it at least helped me to not fall asleep. I’ve already started cutting back as I become more alert through more periods.

My body is starting to adjust to the sleep schedule, which is freakin awesome. I now only feel drowsy for about 30 minutes before the scheduled sleep and 15 minutes afterwards. I’m learning what I can do during those times to push through.

I’ve only had one coffee since I cut down and that was only because I was meeting someone for coffee. I’ve also reduced my alcohol intake (because that hinders deep sleep).

Found out last night that a sharp headache can seriously prevent you from falling asleep quickly. Each time I found myself falling into oblivion the headache would kick in.

The funniest part about that is that the ONLY time in the last week I got a headache was after I OVERSLEPT! Go figure.

I’ve learned that people are incredibly supportive, even when they have no idea what you’re doing and don’t really grasp why you’d do something that (to them) seems so dumb. On the flipside, there are always a few people with tall poppy syndrome, but I’m learning how to deal with them 🙂

This experiment hasn’t affected my physical performance. In fact my workouts are more intense and I go longer into them. I’ve almost managed to complete a tacfit workout. Almost.

My concentration levels, when called upon, haven’t changed. I had no problems concentrating while in goals for BXVI on Wednesday, even though we won 12-0 and it would have been easy to drift off. It’s the games that you dominate the opposition that are always the hardest on the goalkeeper’s concentration.

One of the things I haven’t talked about is that I need all the hours in the day that I can get to create the programs I’m working on. These are crucial to my long-term business success, but they are extremely time consuming. I’ve made some good progress on them so far and look forward to doing a whole lot more in the future.

Finishing week 1 of this challenge has made me realize that, in its current form, this lifestyle is probably not sustainable in the long run. Though it’s a handy weapon in my arsenal for times I need a lot of hours or to deal with long periods of wakefulness (babies anyone?!). During this challenge, I’ll be looking for ways I can modify it so it fits in with my life.

Thank you so much for all your comments. They always add something extra to my motivation and determination to succeed at this challenge. Please keep them coming. If there are specific things you’d like to know (thanks Paul!) just ask them in the comments and I’ll probably do a post on them.

You asking questions helps me in this challenge because often they are things I wouldn’t have otherwise thought of, but are a good cause for reflection and understanding.

  1. Well done Mike – that’s gotta be the hardest week over! It’s certainly interesting to see how you’re going with this, to do some more reading on the whole topic and will be super excited if we can pull it off to do some tests of what’s happening with your sleep architecture. Sorry to hear that naysayers still like to take the shine off things… Anyone who is questioning things like you have mentioned (driving etc.) obviously doesn’t know you well ’cause as I’ve previously commented you are an incredibly responsible person who is very considered in everything. Good job! And may I add that you have the prettiest, most encouraging wife you could possibly hope for – have loved reading Cat’s comments and hearing her talk about this last night as much as reading your posts. 🙂

    1. Thanks Clare. Yeah, I’d be really interested in the results of the tests. I know what I feel, but it’d be great to see hard data on what’s actually happening.

I gotta agree with your comment about Cat. She’s such a fantastic inspiration and totally has no idea how really, really, RIDICULOUSLY good looking she is 🙂

  2. Aww shucks… LoL!!

This week has been incredible! I don’t know how you managed to get through it so well – especially in those times when it was obviously really difficult on you – I was wondering how you’d ever do another twelve weeks! But i’m very impressed. I love waking up knowing you’re around to talk to and finding out what cool things you’ve done while i’ve been sleeping! I’m also super impressed at the way your character has held up through the sleep deprivation – I would have been a grumpy, teary mess!

I love checking into your blog everyday – there’s always something interesting to read.

Looking forward to week two!! xx
